Breath on Paper
Ink painting captures a moment.
A single breath to a single brushstroke. To paint becomes an encounter with a single moment, even when using more than one brush stroke. Working on a variety of traditional calligraphy papers, ink and brush chase each other. Adding color shifts contrast, heightening immediacy.
After training for years by copying Asian classical paintings, I met William Preston whose instruction and mentoring deepened my practice and my painting immeasurably. He asked me to see differently, to use Notan. Sometimes, I could make him laugh. Hopefully, the intelligence and wit he shared so generously comes through in my paintings. Anything lackluster is mine alone.
